Grindmother is a Canadian grindcore musical project centered around a mother, known only by her stage persona "Grindmother," and her son, guitarist and producer Rayny Forster. Based in Windsor, Ontario, the band formed in 2015 and achieved widespread viral fame for the stark contrast between the intense, aggressive nature of the music and the lead singer’s age. Before fronting the project, Grindmother worked as a social worker and enjoyed hobbies like organic gardening and meditation.
Band History and Success
Origins & Viral Breakthrough (2015): The project began when Forster encouraged his mother to record vocals for an extreme metal track. Their debut single, “Any Cost”—a song criticizing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper—went viral online and received a significant boost when it was shared by heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne.
Debut Album (2016): The band released their only full-length album, Age of Destruction, in April 2016. Dealing with serious themes like corporate greed, war, environmentalism, and spirituality, the album received praise from metal critics who commended it as a legitimate, high-quality grindcore release rather than a passing internet gimmick.
Touring (2017–2018): Grindmother transitioned to a live act, playing roughly 60 concert dates across North America and Japan alongside major underground heavy metal bands.
Retirement and Final Shows
Following a multi-year hiatus, the band announced in July 2025 that Grindmother had been diagnosed with advanced dementia. To mark retirement from the stage, they organized a brief, emotional farewell tour consisting of two final sold-out concerts in Montreal and Toronto in December 2025.
Because of her declining health, guest vocalists (including Alissa White-Gluz, formerly of Arch Enemy) handled the majority of the singing duties, while Grindmother took the stage to perform the very last song of each night. In February 2026, she moved into a long-term care facility. Although her live performances have permanently concluded, Forster has stated that previously unreleased music and a variety of other projects being prepared for future release.
